HYBRID IN-PERSON AND ONLINE PROGRAM

The Making of America’s Greatest Classical Architect

Charlie Duff, Planner and Developer based in Baltimore

Reception 1:00 - 1:30 pm

John Russell Pope designed the National Gallery, the National Archives, the Jefferson Memorial, and dozens of other buildings of national importance.  When you go to the Frick, you can see how seamlessly he transformed a house into a public gallery, and his museum work includes major commissions for the British Museum and the Tate Gallery.  He was the greatest master of classical architecture in American history.

How was it that he got his start in Baltimore?  He wasn’t from here.  He didn’t go to school here.  But it was a Baltimorean who gave us his first independent commission, and it was Baltimoreans who gave him the chance to build his first museum.  How was it that a quintessential New Yorker – as he was – left more of a mark on Baltimore than on any other city except Washington?

To find out, join us on October 28 as Charlie Duff introduces us to Pope’s work and investigates his work in our city.  Charlie has often spoken to ASG on architecture and urban development, and many of us have read and enjoyed his book The North Atlantic Cities.
