Fra Angelico and Renaissance Florence

ONLINE PROGRAM

Fra Angelico and Renaissance Florence

Elaine Ruffolo, Renaissance Art Historian

Reception 1:00 - 1:30 pm

Fra Angelico, one of the great artists of the early Renaissance, is renowned for his exquisite use of color, light, and composition, which imbue his works with a sense of ethereal beauty and spirituality. His style is characterized by delicate, almost dreamlike figures and serene expressions, often set against richly detailed backgrounds that enhance the narrative quality of his pieces. He skillfully employed techniques such as chiaroscuro to create depth, while his emphasis on harmony and balance reflects the ideals of the period. Fra Angelico's devotion to religious themes and his ability to convey divine grace through art have established him as a master of narrative painting.

From September 26, 2025, to January 25, 2026, the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi and the Museo di San Marco present Fra Angelico, an extraordinary and unprecedented exhibition devoted to an artist who symbolizes fifteenth-century Florentine art and stands out as one of the greatest masters of Italian art of all time. Join Renaissance art historian, Elaine Ruffolo as she explores Fra Angelico’s art, development and influence, and his relation to painters such as Lorenzo Monaco, Masaccio, and Filippo Lippi, as well as sculptors like Lorenzo Ghiberti, Michelozzo, and Luca della Robbia.
