HYBRID IN-PERSON AND ONLINE PROGRAM

Everything You Need to Know About Pre-Columbian Mexico But Were Afraid to Ask

Ellen Hoobler, Director, William Paterson University Galleries

Reception 1:00 - 1:30 pm

When looking at survey books on the history of ancient Mexico and its art, the names can seem bewildering and filled with the letter “x” in unexpected places. However, there are a few basics that travelers to Mexico City and its environs will want to know and be able to look for. This talk will cover foundational symbols and myths about ancient Central Mexico, from what the eagle is doing on top of the cactus in the national flag to how the Virgin of Guadalupe is related to the Pre-Spanish era. An affectionate and fun intro to Pre-Columbian Mexican history from someone who has been visiting the country for 30 years, and who lived in Mexico City for two years.

$15 fee for guests and subscribers (no fee for members)
