All Aboard for Art in DC

Thursday, April 23, 2026

Departure: 9:00 am, Return approximately 5:00 pm

Meeting location: Baltimore Penn Station, 1500 North Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21201

Ride the train with ASG to DC to take a guided tour of the Wilbur J. Cohen Federal Building and self-guided tour of the National Museum of the American Indian (NAMI). The group will depart from Baltimore's Penn Station, transfer to the Metro at New Carrolton, and take it to Federal Center SW. There the group will split in two and walk 5min to either the Cohen Building or NAMI. The entire group will meet for lunch at NAMI's Mitsitam Native Foods Cafe, which offers a menu of Native-inspired foods. The group will then switch before heading home. The Cohen building has been called the Sistine Chapel of the New Deal. The Section of Fine Arts commissioned exterior sculptures and interior murals. For the spaces over the four central entrances, artists Emma Lou Davis and Henry Kreis each created two granite bas relief panels with social security themes. On the interior, scenes of American life and family are represented in murals by Seymour Fogel, Philip Guston, Ethel and Jenne Magafan, and Ben Shahn. On view at NAMI is Water’s Edge: The Art of Truman Lowe, the first major retrospective of the acclaimed Hoocąk (Ho-Chunk) artist. Lowe’s elegant, minimalist sculptures made of willow branches, feathers, and other organic materials evoke the rivers, streams, and waterfalls of the Wisconsin woodlands where he was raised and the canoes used to traverse them.

Members-only (limited to 30 people). Fee $25 includes train fare and all museum costs. Attendees will need credit card to tap to pay on Metro and we will go dutch for lunch. Full refund before April 10, no refund after. Group will meet at Baltimore Penn Station at 9:00 AM and return to Baltimore by 5:00 PM. Times are approximate based on train schedule and are subject to change if there is any train delay.
