On the Road to Somewhere: Pilgrimages in American Art
Tuesday, March 3, 2026 1:30 PM EST
Hybrid in-person and online program at The Woman's Club of Roland Park & via Zoom
What if you made a sculptural installation and almost no one came? Some of the twentieth century’s most iconic artworks exist in the sublime isolation of the American West. Hileman will share the awe-inspiring experience of visiting Donald Judd’s sculptural installations in Marfa, TX; Walter De Maria’s The Lightning Field in Catron County, NM; and Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty in Corinne, UT. She will discuss the artworks’ unique histories and consider why artists take the seemingly contrary approach of embedding their works in sites that ensure that fewer rather than more people see them.
