Learn about the twentieth-century American artist John Biggers, and follow his artistic journey from his beginnings in Gastonia, North Carolina, through his education at Hampton University and Penn State University, his important work founding the art department at Texas Southern University, and his travels in Africa. We will explore his early scenes depicting African American life in the 1940s and 1950s, his drawings and paintings inspired by visits to Western Africa in the 1950s and 1960s, and the iconography of his mature paintings and murals that connect African traditions to African American ones.
