The term “Art Deco” stems from the Paris exhibit of 1925, The Exhibit of Decorative and Industrial Art. French art deco was characterized by exotic wood veneers and lacquered finishes, many times accented with ivory and other materials. In the United States the style took a turn emphasizing a streamlined look. Many US designers travelled to the Paris exhibit and visited the more austere Bauhaus school. Their designs were characterized by simple elegance, functionality, and geometric patterns. This influence is seen in furniture design, clocks, tableware, automobiles and the truly American icon—the skyscraper. Many Art Deco designers and images will be discussed in this lecture.
