From the moviesinception, French filmmakers have played an outsize role, from brothers Auguste and Louis Lumière developing their combination camera/projector (dubbed the Cinématographe), to Alice Guy-Blaché, an important early pioneer and the first woman to direct a feature film. In our 2026 series, entitled Vive La Femme,” we offer films made within the last ten years from six brilliant and exciting contemporary French women directors. We honor the contributions of veteran artist Claire Denis, as well as the young women who have followed in her influential footsteps: Alice Diop, Mia Hansen-Løve, Céline Sciamma, Alice Winocour, and Rebecca Zlotowski. Over the course of 6 films—Other Peoples Children (2022), Proxima (2019), Saint Omer (2022), Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019), Things to Come (2016), and Let the Sunshine In (2017)—we will celebrate these innovative directors and their work. In ways their male counterparts rarely, if ever, do, these six directors examine issues that speak to the specific challenges that women face as professionals, romantic partners, and mothers. Vive la femme, indeed.

The summer film series is created in partnership with The Renaissance Institute.
