IN-PERSON PROGRAM

Tashiding: The Gardens of Douglas & Tsognie Hamilton

Join ASG for a private tour of Tashiding, the stunning 100-acre landscape environment and residence of Douglas Hamilton, former president and chairman of The Walters Museum, and Tsognie Wangmo, the eldest child of the last king of Sikkim. Part arboretum, part garden park, and part Xanadu,  the property was planned and sculpted by Doug and Tsognie over the past 25 years to evoke the sense of harmony and well-being of the joining of  their two distinct cultures.  A "very auspicious place" Tashiding blends an Eastern sensibility with native Maryland plantings grouped to offer both painterly delight and quiet contemplation. Thematic sections punctuated with rocks, sculpture and ornament encourage experiences such as the thrill of the breeze on a cool day, or being mesmerized as the wind forms abstract ripples on the surface of the lake. After strolling the grounds for at least an hour and a half (outdoor shoes are a necessity) we will stop to enjoy a boxed lunch and iced tea in the lakeside tea house. Don't miss this chance to chat with the Hamiltons about the ideas and experiences behind the creation of this wondrous place.

Members-only, registration required (limited to 30 people). Fee $30.
