Known But Unknown is a series on four contemporary artists (three of whom are working today) curated by Kristen Hileman.

Often characterized as an inscrutable artist, Matthew Barney consistently explores the use of resistance to break down and rebuild form both in sculpture and in life experience. Independent curator and educator Kristen Hileman will follow this thread in Barney’s work from his signature Cremaster Cycle through Secondary, a media installation presented in the artist’s studio during the summer of 2023. Hileman will also consider how Barney expands the boundaries of sculpture and develops a unique iconography by entwining landscape, cinema, sound, dance, and popular culture.
