A Concise History of World Architecture in 24 Examples: From the Middle Ages to Early Modernism (Lecture 2 of 3)

Kerr Houston, professor of art history, theory and criticism, Maryland Institute College of Art

Many of the most famous buildings in the world date to the period between the fall of ancient Rome (about 450) and the beginning of the Industrial Revolution (about 1760). In this talk we will focus on aesthetic and stylistic attributes and on the ways in which the structures reflect prevailing ideologies. We will concentrate on eight seminal examples including the Hagia Sophia, the Todaiji Temple in Nara, and the Complex of Sultan Hasan in Cairo.
