Navigating Complex Terrain:
Themes in Contemporary Art Since 1980 – Part III: Rise of the Curator
Paula Burleigh, Joan Tisch Teaching Fellow, Whitney Museum of American Art
In this lecture, we will zoom out, looking not only at individual artists, but to major shifts within the art world writ large. We will look at the “biennialization” of the art world in the 1990s, the rising star of the curator, and the collapsing of boundaries between artist and curator. Relatedly, we will discuss the legacy of Institutional Critique in the 1990s and 2000s, looking at artists whose work engages with art institutions and markets, including examples by Fred Wilson, Louise Lawler, Andrea Fraser and Angie Keefer.
